Jimmy Carter 'Titillated' by Obama

Former President Jimmy Carter isn't going to make a formal endorsment in this election, but it's clear where his heart lies.

PLAINS, Ga. -- Former President Jimmy Carter lavished praise on Illinois Sen. Barack Obama during an interview at his home Monday, though he won't formally endorse any candidate in the race for the Democratic nomination.

"Obama's campaign has been extraordinary and titillating for me and my family," Mr. Carter said. The 83-year-old former president, who left the White House in 1981, compared Mr. Obama's speeches to those of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and said he believed the candidate could carry some southern states if he becomes the Democratic nominee.

[...]Mr. Carter said that his three other children and his 11 grandchildren support Mr. Obama. Mr. Carter's oldest son, Jack Carter, 60, who unsuccessfully ran for the U.S. Senate in Nevada two years ago, recently endorsed Mr. Obama. He originally backed Delaware Sen. Joseph Biden, who has since dropped out of the presidential race.

Mr. Carter said he has had limited direct contact with Mr. Obama but has been particularly impressed with the candidate's recent public appearances. "The speech he made after Iowa and the speech he made the other night after South Carolina are equal in eloquence to Martin Luther King Jr.," Mr. Carter said. "He has an extraordinary oratory ... I think that Obama will be almost automatically a healing factor in the animosity now that exists, that relates to our country and its government."

Jimmy Carter is a man of tremendous integrity and the last truly liberal president of our lifetimes.  As such, his words and thoughts and Obama are of great significance.

Well, I guess some around here are going to have to attack Carter as well now.

All 11 grandchildren?  That's quite a get.

Re: Jimmy Carter 'Titillated' by Obama (none / 0)

If you want to analyze it solely in terms of race or gender either way it would be a big deal.  In fact in terms of race it would be a bigger deal.   Currently there are 16 women in the Senate and just one African American. There have been 35 female senators in history, but there have only been five black Senators (three of them, including Obama, elected after reconstruction).  There have been female leaders of several Western states, but never has a person of color led a western nation.

So, I don't think that that alone would be a reason to pick one of the two candidates, but if that is going to be your metric, historically speaking, it would be a much bigger deal if Obama won.

If we made Obama President, there wouldn't be any African-Americans in the Senate at all.  That seems like an outcome we should try to avoid.

Re: Women sorely underrepresented. (none / 0)

Sorry Nancy, but you got that wrong.

Women are 52% of the population and only 16% of the Senate. This means they are under-represented by a factor of 3 (i.e. for a gender-proportional representation, it should be three times as many female Senators)

Blacks are 13.6% of the population, but only 1% of the Senate. This means they are under-represented by a factor of 13-14.

You can also put it like this:

For ca. 160.000.000 women, there are 16 female Senators (10.000.000 women per Senator)

For 40.000.000 African Americans, there's one AA Senator (40.000.000 AA per Senator)

Clearly, blacks are more under-represented.

As an Edwards supporter, I have to remind everybody that the President is supposed to represent all Americans, as well as a Senator has to represent all the people in his/her state.

(There really are no 'Women Senators' or 'AA Senators', or 'White Senators', for that matter - there is only the Senator from Illinois, the Senator of NY - and the former Senator of NC)

It is not about a candidates' gender or ethnicity, it is about his/her ideas to build a better America, including his/her ideas to battle sexism/racism. I am strictly opposed to the idea that women are better fit to represent women, or blacks to represent blacks.

E pluribus unum, no?

Apparently she's got to depend on her husband to run her campaign.

I love Carter (at times) but it's probably best he doesn't endorse- as respected as he is- it's hard to dispute he is always near the top of the list of polls as one of the worst Presidents ever- even if his post-President career has been impressive.

Re: Jimmy Carter 'Titillated' by Obama (none / 0)

Not quite.   Americans have dramatically reevaluated Jimmy Carter's presidency:

In a sign of just how severe the damage to the President's standing caused by Katrina is, the Zogby America survey finds that, despite his re-election last fall, President Bush would lose to every modern president since Jimmy Carter, the one-term Democrat who left office amid record unpopularity and a presidency rated, at the time, dismally.

Bush 42
Carter 50

For the record, Bush beat John Kerry in the same poll.
