Clinton Gives Up on MO, KS, CO, AK?

The Clinton campaign appears to be playing defense heading into Super Tuesday.

Lots of interesting stuff in this Guardian article, but this is what stood out to me:

The two contenders for the Democratic nomination are now in a virtual dead heat for the party nomination ahead of Super Tuesday. The two are spending $19m on ads in the final hours of the contest. Obama is advertising in 21 of the 22 states, while Clinton is targeting 19, having apparently given up on Alaska, Colorado, Kansas and Missouri. Neither candidate is running television ads in Obama's home state of Illinois.

So, not only has Hillary Clinton completely thrown in the towel in Alaska, Colorado, Kansas, and Missouri, but she is also not advertising in Obama's home state of Illinois.  Meanwhile, Obama is advertising in New York, and Hillary is being forced to advertise in her home state as well.

Going into to Super Tuesday, it certainly seems Obama has Hillary on the back foot.

I have to confess that I had no clue who Mike Gravel was until last week...

Re: Clinton Gives Up on MO, KS, CO, AK? (none / 0)

She is airing ads in MO and has made stops there, so how is that giving up? As for KS, CO and AK; there is no point in contending in KS and AK, as those are caucus states and she is not strong in those while in CO, Bill made a stop there. She is airing ads in New York to shore up among African-Americans, who are voting for Sen. Obama; while the whites and blacks in IL will not vote for Sen. Clinton as Obama is from that state.

Re: Clinton Gives Up on MO, KS, CO, AK? (none / 0)

P.S. The AA vote is strong for Obama in Trenton, Newark, Harlem etc., so she is just trying to shore up that support.

Now, no one will accuse the AA of being biased; however, if the whites don't vote for Obama, they are "racist"

I've already heard enough of your views on race to know that I don't need to hear any more.

"while the whites and blacks in IL will not vote for Sen. Clinton as Obama is from that state."

Racism aside, the irony of that statement is that CLINTON is the one who IS from Illinois, while Obama's (maternal) family is from Kansas and he grew up primarily in Hawaii.

Yes she grew up there, but Obama has lived there for longer... and HE IS our Senator... just like I consider her From NY since she is the NY Senator.

Re: Clinton Gives Up on MO, KS, CO, AK? (none / 0)

She's within a point in the worst poll in Missouri and she gives up?  Since the media said so, she must have done so.

Maybe a bit of math before the post? (none / 0)

SInce when does 2 = 4?

Per usual, some wires get crossed as they go overseas.

"Clinton is targeting 19, having apparently given up on Alaska, Colorado, Kansas and Missouri. Neither candidate is running television ads in Obama's home state of Illinois."

There are 22 states up, Clinton is targeting 19, they say.

Neither is up in IL, that makes twenty.

How many left?

2

Which 2?  Who knows, but I'd guess its AK and a caucus state.

Re: Maybe a bit of math before the post? (none / 0)

IL is Obama by default mode.  If Clinton doesn't advertise there, it means she is ceding the state.   On the other hand, Obama is contesting NY.  So Obama has not given up on IL, but has won it, while Clinton has to fight for her own state.

Re: Maybe a bit of math before the post? (2.00 / 1)

The only way to reach most of NJ and CT is to advertise in the NY media market. So while Obama will be happy to improve his chances in NY he must advertise in NY to compete at all in NJ and CT. He is not contesting NY, he is contesting CT and to a lesser extent NJ.

The IL media markets don't cover much other than IL (MO's St. Louis covers southern IL), so resource wise it does not make sense to spend money in IL.

Nope (none / 0)

Obama's Grassroots New York Campaign
By Robin Shulman
NEW YORK -- New York may be Sen. Hillary Clinton's home turf, but the Obama campaign is targeting four heavily African American congressional districts in New York City, says State Senator Bill Perkins of Harlem, an Obama supporter, as well as ethnically mixed and majority-white areas throughout the state.

The African American city neighborhoods include Harlem in Manhattan, Bedford-Stuyvesant, East New York and Brownsville in Brooklyn, and the middle-class, high home-ownership communities of southeast Queens.

"Those are districts where there's strong, strong support," said Perkins. "But we're also able to qualify delegates throughout the state." Perkins has also been campaigning for Obama outside the city. "Each of those congressional districts and districts throughout the state have a grassroots operation that will be meaningful in terms of getting out votes," he said. "I don't want to say we're limiting ourselves."

"There are effectively 29 campaigns," noted Joyce Johnson, the Obama state field director, one for each of the state's 29 congressional districts. Many supporters are young and white, she said -- a profile shared by Obama's core supporters in Iowa, Nevada, and New Hampshire.

Re: Nope (none / 0)

What does field have to do with TV ads? Of course Obama has not written off NY, nor has Clinton written off IL. The point is your diary, and specifically the speculation about advertising in NY, is empty.

Re: Nope (none / 0)

You just said Obama is not contesting NY, the article clearly disproves your contention.

Re: Nope (none / 0)

OK, according to this NY Times article today Clinton is advertising in Missouri, which covers Southern Illinois, so she is 'contesting' IL.

Of course, she isn't contesting IL, she has no hope of winning there, she is trying to shave some delegates at the margin, just as Obama is in NY.

Re: Nope (none / 0)

I didn't put a value judgement on it, just called it what it was, racist. You can call it "demographics" or "idenity politics" but it doesn't hide the core fact. Of course Hillary  appeals to women  but she can do that in a positive way because women are over half the electorate. Barack decided to go negative and paint others as racist because he not only has to get all of his "demographic" but he has to guilt other segments into voting for him as well. He isn't winning on issues. That is my problem with him.

Well I am pretty sure he harbors no delusions of winning... but the closer he can make it the better off for him it is.

So what?  The article is still wrong in basic math and on which states she's advertising in, and you didn't bother to address that.  You're grasping at straws.

Re: Clinton Gives Up on MO, KS, CO, AK? (none / 0)

First of all, their math doesn't work.

...while Clinton is targeting 19, having apparently given up on Alaska, Colorado, Kansas and Missouri. Neither candidate is running television ads in Obama's home state of Illinois.

That clearly says she's "given up" on 5 states - Alaska, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri and Illinois.  There are 22 states on Tuesday, so in what world does 22 - 5= 19? I'm not Stephen Hawking, but that ain't right.

Second, she was just in Missouri yesterday and in Colorado a couple of days ago.  How does that equal giving up?

Read the Washington Post for coverage of their elections?

Re: Do you think people in London (none / 0)

No, because they don't want to get their news from big corporate media, which is basically what most news sources are in the United States.  Unlike US corporate media, the Guardian is owned by a non-profit foundation.  Also, they recently have spent millions of dollars to set up a stateside operation, GuardianAmerica.  They're political coverage is actually quite sharp.  You should check it out.
